- May 10 – The English colony of Connecticut is subdivided into Fairfield County, Hartford County, New Haven County, and New London County.
1674
- November 10 – As provided in the Treaty of Westminster of February 19, the Dutch Republic cedes its colony of New Netherland to the Kingdom of England. This includes the colonial capital, New Orange, which is returned to its English name of New York. The colonies of Berbice and Essequibo (now Guyana), and Suriname, remain in Dutch hands.

- November 1 – The English crown colony of New York is subdivided into Albany County, Cornwall County (now part of Maine), Duchess County (now spelled Dutchess), Dukes County (now part of Massachusetts), Kings County, New York County, Orange County, Queens County, Richmond County, Suffolk County, Ulster County, and Westhcester County.
