The X-Men are a privately owned security force, created to bring about peace between the emerging homo sapiens superior (mutants) and homo sapiens sapiens (humans). They are comprised of mutants who have been trained and educated in the use of their powers at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and their operations are funded through Professor Charles Xavier's family fortune, as well as from the patents he created.
